Lookout Point Ranch is a 500-acre commercial farm in the Cascade foothills near Lowell, Oregon. We have been raising purebred Kiko goats since 2002. Kikos are a breed of goat derived from feral goats in New Zealand, which has a rainy climate and rugged terrain quite similar to our own. This breed is an alternative to Boer goats, which tend to require much more management when run under challenging conditions in a wet climate. We chose Kikos because they are the only breed we know of that can thrive under a hands-off management style in the Pacific Northwest. We are a member of the American Kiko Goat Association.

We use the New Zealand model of low-input goat rearing, with no barns or other manmade shelter for the goats, and little to no supplemental feed, even during the winter. We check hooves twice a year, trimming only 5-10% of the goats each time. We have wormed twice a year in the past, but are experimenting with fecal egg testing and reduced worming regimens. We may stop worming altogether in the near future. Our does are expected to kid at 2 years of age, and rear twins to weaning at each kidding. We kid in March. No assistance is given at any birth. The only shelter provided is trees. Goats that cannot produce under our management are culled.

We've learned a lot "the hard way" and hope to share it with others. Our rainy Pacific Northwest has many areas that could support goat farming if cost-effective management techniques and hardy, climate-adapted goats are used.

We strive to provide for our customers the learning experiences and quality assurances we wish we could have had, when we were first starting out. Buyers may examine any aspect of our operation they would like to see, including our production records, when choosing an animal. We also offer a replacement guarantee on our animals up to 8 years of age. We would rather have the chance to remedy any dissatisfaction than have a customer of ours go away unhappy.
